File Explorer in Windows 10


You can find windows explorer icon at the bottom of the screen on the taskbar, or you can open it using keyboard shortcut “Windows Symbol + E”

Also, you can open it from the start menu.

Note: There is an application that has the same function of windows file explorer called “My computer,” application named “My computer” applied till Windows 8, on Windows 10 it becomes “This PC” which you can open from the start menu by searching for “This PC”

Screen is divided into multiple sections,

-Quick Access

Quick access is like favorite folder, it holds all favorite places you need to go, also frequently opened places.

Through quick access, you can visit desktop, check your internet downloads through Downloads Folder, check Microsoft saved documents through Document Folder, saved pictures through Pictures Folder


Another section:

-One drive:


One drive is used as online backup service like Google drive but made for Microsoft. Through it, you can save your important data from being damaged or deleted, you can save Documents, movies, pictures, etc.

One drive offer free storage 15 GB

-Another section: This PC

This PC contain folders of Quick Access in addition to Hard Drive Partitions

As we see that Our Hard Disk is only divided into 2 partitions C: and E:


On the right, on This PC section, you will see details of these links


Now we see summary of our Hard Disk, we see Drive C: name (Local Disk), and data about its total size, consumed size and free size

Example: 10.9 GB free of 48.2 GB. Same for Drive E

Note: You can change the later of this Drives, but it need high technical experience, and we will talk about it in advance tutorials.

Another Section: Network

If you have a business or home network, you will see connected devices on the same network in this folder. Also, you can see shared files and folders of your network partners through Network Folder


Now if you need to explore Drive C: files just use left mouse button and double click on it.


Now you see files and folder, and you are ready to navigate through it.

Now if the view of files and folders doesn’t suit you, you can change it to the desired view by a simple action.

  • On top of file explorer application, there is view tab, just click on it and choose the view that suits you.
