How to install XAMPP 1.8.2 in Ubuntu
If you’re a web developer who needs Apache, MySQL, PHP server for your daily development task, XAMPP is a nice tool for you. XAMPP comes prepackaged with the latest version of Apache, MySQL, PHP and an ftp server. It is also easy to deploy a XAMPP server on both Windows and Ubuntu Linux operating systems.
This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to install XAMPP web server on Ubuntu operating system. To follow this tutorial, you need to have the following requirements:
- A computer with Ubuntu operating system installed.
- Good internet connection to download the required software packages from the internet.
- Basic knowledge of Ubuntu terminal. With basic I mean, how to open a terminal on Ubuntu and how to execute commands.
Let’s get started.
Step 1: Open Mozilla Firefox or any other browser of your choice and visit the official website of XAMPP at https://www.apachefriends.org and click on “XAMPP for Linux”.
Step 2: Your browser will prompt you to Download XAMPP. Click on “Ok” to save it on your default download location set by the browser.
Step 3: The file will start downloading. Depending on the speed of your internet connection it will take several minutes. Please wait till it finishes.
Step 4: Once it’s complete, open the terminal of your Ubuntu operating system. You can open your terminal by pressing Control, Alt and T at the same time. You can also go to the Unity dashboard and search by the keyword “Terminal” and click on the terminal. Or you can right click on the Desktop and click on “Open Terminal”.
Now we have to navigate to the folder where the XAMPP installation file is downloaded. Type in the following command and press Enter.
Step 5: Now we have to make the installation file executable. Type the following command and press Enter.
“chmod +x xampp-linux-x64-5.6.24-1-installer.run”
Step 6: Now to install XAMPP, type the following command and press Enter.
Type in your password and press Enter. The XAMPP setup window will begin. Click on “Next”.
Step 7: You don’t have to do anything here. Just click on “Next”.
Step 8: Click on “Next”.
Step 9: Click on “Next”.
Step 10: Click on “Next”.
Step 11: The installation will begin. Please wait till it finishes.
Step 12: Once the installation is complete, you will see a window. Click on “Finish”
Step 13: You will see the Welcome screen of XAMPP server.
Step 14: XAMPP is now successfully installed on your system. To test if it is working correctly open Mozilla Firefox or any of your favorite browser and go to the address http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost . You will see the Welcome screen of XAMPP web server.
Step 15: That’s it. XAMPP is working correctly. Installing XAMPP on Ubuntu operating system is really very easy.
