How to Install Ubuntu on Virtual Box

 

In this tutorial, we will install Ubuntu 16.04LTS on an open source virtualization software called VirtualBox.

To follow this tutorial, you will need

  • Ubuntu 16.04LTS or any other Ubuntu Desktop iso File. If you don’t have that already, the instructions are given bellow.
  • The latest version of Oracle VirtualBox. VirtualBox can be downloaded from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads . Make sure you have that installed. We are going to use VirtualBox 5.x in this tutorial.

That’s it. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Go to https://www.ubuntu.com/. Hover over “Download” at the right and select “Desktop” from the list.

Step 2: You will see a page like this. Click on the download

Step 3: You will see a page like this. Click on “, take me to the download”.

Step 4: Your download should begin soon. If it doesn’t click on “download now”.

Step 5: Save the file on your computer.

 

Step 6: Once the download is complete, open VirtualBox. On the VirtualBox window, click on “New.

Step 7: You will see a window like this.

Step 8: Put “Ubuntu Desktop” as Name. The type and version should be selected automatically. Then click on Next.

Step 9: You will see a window like this. This is where you set how much memory (RAM) you want your VM to have. Type 2048 if you want 2GB of RAM or 4096 if you want 4GB of RAM. Don’t give your VM the whole available RAM.  Then click on “Next”.

Step 10: Here, leave it as it is and click on “Create”.

Step 11: Leave it as it is and click on “Next”.

Step 12: Leave it as it is and click on “Next”.

Step 13: Now select how much hard drive space you want your Ubuntu VM to have. 8GB is fine. But I will select 20GB. Because I have lots of space on my physical hard drive. Then click on “Create”.

Step 14: Congrats! You have created a VM for Ubuntu. It will show in your VirtualBox main window.

Step 15: Click on “Start” after the “Ubuntu Desktop” VM is selected.

Step 16: You will see the window like this. Click on the highlighted icon.

Step 17: Select the ubuntu ISO image you just downloaded and click on “Open”.

Step 18: Click on “Start” and wait till the VM starts Ubuntu installation.

Step 19: On the Ubuntu installation window, click on “Install Ubuntu”.

Step 20: Don’t have to do anything now. Click on “Continue”.

Step 21: Leave the default option selected and click on “Install Now” .

Step 22: Click on “Continue”.

Step 23: Type in your country. I will leave “New York”. Click on “Continue”.

Step 24: Select your keyboard layout. I will leave it English. Click on “Continue”.

Step 25: Now type in the details and click “Continue”.

Step 26: The installation will begin. Take a cup of coffee or tea (whichever you prefer) and wait.

Step 27: Once the installation is complete you will see a dialog like this. Click on “Restart Now” and wait.

Step 28: Type in your password at the login prompt and press Enter.

Step 29: Great! You have just installed Ubuntu Desktop on VirtualBox.
