How to Install Komodo in Ubuntu

 

Komodo Edit is a powerful code editor by ActiveState. It’s used by many web developers and programmers worldwide. Komodo Edit is free to download and use. ActiveState has an IDE called Komodo IDE. Komodo IDE is not free, but it has more feature than Komodo Edit.

This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to install Komodo Edit on Ubuntu. To follow this tutorial, you need to have the following requirements:

  • A computer with Ubuntu operating system installed.
  • Good internet connection to download the required software packages from the internet.
  • A web browser for downloading Komodo Edit installation file.
  • Basic knowledge of Ubuntu terminal. With basic I mean, how to open a terminal on Ubuntu and how to execute commands. 

Let’s get started. 

Step 1: To install Komodo Edit on Ubuntu, first we have to download the Komodo Edit binary file for Ubuntu from ActiveState’s official website. Go to http://www.activestate.com/komodo-edit from Mozilla Firefox or any of your favorite web browser.

Once the page loads, click on the “Download Komodo Edit” black button as shown in the screenshot.

Now click on the button as marked in the screenshot below. Komodo Edit download will begin. Save the installation file.

Step 2: Once the download is complete. Go to the folder where you saved Komodo Edit setup file. Now locate the setup file on the directory and right click on it. Click on “Extract Here” to extract the archive.

Once the extraction process is complete, you will see the following directory as marked in the screenshot.

Right click on the folder and click on “Open in Terminal”.

Ubuntu terminal will start as show in the screenshot.

Step 3: Now it’s time to install Komodo Edit. To do that, type the following command,
“sudo ./install.sh” and press Enter.

If you’re prompted for the password, type in your user password and press Enter.

You will be prompted for the installation directory, type in “/opt/KomodoEdit10” and press Enter.

Komodo Edit should be installed.

Step 4: Now it’s time to start Komodo Edit. Go to the Unity dash and search “komodo”, you should see Komodo Edit’s launcher icon. Click on it.

It should start Komodo Edit. Click on next once it starts.

Click on Next

Click on Finish on the next step. You will see the welcome screen of Komodo Edit.
